Dear friends,

It is the end of the year and, as always, June is crazier and more hectic than ever!  We have all been working hard all year and so many of you have been steadfast and deeply appreciated supporters of the PTA all year long.  It has been a great, wonderful, hard-working year!

I hate to do this to you–you almost made it to the end of the year without the PTA coming to you to open your wallets, hearts, and work schedules one more time!  You thought you were safe!  You thought you could go to the beach!  Well, think again.

Seriously,  I’m sure all of you are aware of the fundraiser at La Piazetta tomorrow evening, June 15 @ 6pm to help fund the renovations of the School Settlement for our partnership with them that will be growing as we grow.  So far, a very small handful of PS 132 parents have committed to attending tomorrow evening’s event at La Piazetta, and I wanted to let you know this because this fundraiser needs your support!

I wanted to let you know that the PTA intends to donation $2000 to the School Settlement renovations (and which will be voted on at Thursday morning’s meeting).  But I also wanted to let you know that the fundraising goal for this event is 33k, and the SSA would love to have the support of more of our community of parents.

Here’s what you can do:  if possible, please attend tomorrow evening’s event at La Piazetta.  You may buy tickets at the door!

Or, if you are unable to attend, The School Settlement Association has a website where you can donate towards the renovations in ANY amount.  Simply go to www.schoolsettlement.org and you will see the ‘Donate Now” button on the homepage.

I think we all know how important this project is to our school; it’s just that things slip through the cracks, especially at the end of the year!  So, I just wanted to put out the word, and remind ourselves this fundraiser is for our gym, to keep our art and science spaces, things we all really want.  And if you can, go to La Piazetta tomorrow (located at 442 Graham).  And if you can’t, donate at www.schoolsettlement.org.

Best regards,
Trish Hale

So many things have transpired since our last PTA meeting in April!  Please come to our next PTA meeting to hear about the amazing turnouts at our First Annual Spring Gala Auction and our Sixth Annual Kite Festival.

It is also the time of year to start nominating yourself for the 2010-2011 PTA Executive Board.  Tara, Krista, and myself want to encourage as many people as possible to run.  We love this school, and we know you do, too.  It has been a truly wonderful experience being your PTA Board, and enormously gratifying working closely with an administration we admire and working for a parent-body we deeply respect.  It has been our collective honor and pleasure to have served.

And similarly with honor and respect, we must pass the torch!  If you have considered the possibility, DO IT!  It is an incredibly important job that should reflect all of the different ideas and talents of our awesome parent-body.  We all have one goal:  to each year make something that’s already great a little better.  We know you can do it, and we’ll support you.

Please, fill out the form that was sent out by your 2010 Nominating Committee before the PTA meeting;  or, you may self-nominate at the meeting as well.  After the PTA meeting on May 25th, nominations will be closed until elections in June.

 Meeting agenda:

  • Minutes from 4.15 meeting
  • Detailed Treasurer’s Report
  • Detailed Spring Gala Report
  • Detailed Kite Festival Report

We hope to see you there!

Dear Families and Caregivers! The PS 132 Parent Teacher Association (PTA) is pleased to host its 6th Annual PS132 Kite Festival on May 15, 2010 from 12 pm – 4 pm in McCarren Park. The Kite Festival will be held in conjunction with the citywide “It’s My Park Day” event and will be held in the softball fields in McCarren Park (N. 12th Street between Driggs and Bedford Avenue) to be celebrated by our greater Williamsburg, Greenpoint and Brooklyn communities!

This year, our event is entitled “A Kid Grows in Brooklyn” with fun-filled, hands-on, eco-friendly experiences for kids of all ages.  Entertainment includes Audra Rox, the Hungry March Band, PS132 TADA performances, dance performaces by local kids with WMAAC and Studio Metro Dance…and more!   Arts and crafts will include kite-making using recycled materials with The Painted Cloud, festive facepainting and costume-making crafts such as butterfly wings and capes! Kids and families will also be able to learn about our local resources by planting seeds and seedlings from local farms and trying yummy foods from our Greenmarket. We will also have a composting demo with Green Apple Kids where you can take home your very own worm-starter kits! Worms are also being donated by North Brooklyn Compost Project.  The Brooklyn Public Library will also be there to sign you and your child up for a free library card if you don’t yet have one!

To help make this event a success, we need your help in both the form of volunteers and donations!!!    A flyer went home recently with specific requests for donations and to recruit help for the day of the event. If you haven’t already signed up, please contact Krista Martel (kristamartel@gmail.com).

We can’t wait to see everyone there!

Spring Gala FAQ’s

When you arrive at Giando on the Water (www.giandoonthewater.com), you will be checked in off of our Spring Gala Guest List.  No paper tickets have been given out.  You will be assigned a random number and handed a paper version of our Auction Catalogue which lists all of the auction items.  The event begins at 6pm and ends at 10pm.

The Auction, dinner and bar service begin at 6pm, though you may arrive anytime you like during the evening.  Just note that auction tables will start closing down at 8:30 pm, the teacher treat raffle will close at 8:30 pm, and dinner service will close around 9:30pm.

You may drive to Giando’s; they are providing valet service. (Though valet gratuity not included in ticket price.)  Of course, there is also nearby street parking which is free.

After parking and after checking in and receiving your randomly assigned number and Auction Catalogue, go enjoy yourself in the beautiful banquet room on the second floor of Giando’s:  get a glass of wine, some food, and check out all the tables filled with auction goods.

There will be approximately 8 tables filled with all the donated auction items.  The items will be organized by category (Restaurant & Bar, Art & Home, Classroom Projects, etc.)

Each item on the auction tables will have a bid sheet with a minimum bid.  The minimum bids have been set at approximately 20% of the item’s estimated value.

When you see something you like, place a bid on the bid sheet.  You do this by writing down your randomly assigned number and the dollar amount you are bidding.

If you are the first bidder, this number must be equal to or greater than the minimum bid.  If you are not the first bidder, your bid must be at least $5 over the previous bid.   (That is, no $1 increases, but you can do anythign over $5).

Keep checking on those auction items you really want.  Someone else may have outbid you, and bidding is open and continuous until that auction table is closed.  Like eBay, you are allowed to place as many bids as you like.

Auction tables will be closed down, one at a time, starting at 8:30.  We will announce what table is being shut down before doing so.

Once a table has been shut down, all bidding on those items is complete.

When the outcome of each of your auction bids has been determined, the Spring Gala Committee will be happy to process your payment and give you your goods.

We will accept payments by cash, check, or credit card.

In the event you will not be present when the outcome of your auction bids have been determined, please make sure you leave your contact information with the Spring Gala Chairs so that we may get in touch with you after the auction.
